When to redesign your website and why

When to redesign your website and why.
Most of our clients redesign their websites on an average every 3-4 years. We have clients who are on their 3rd or 4th version of their websites. This process of renewal and revamping closely follows the business growth and development of the client's company as well. Therefore growth spurs the redesign and creates a virtuous cycle. Needless to say every version of the site improves it and creates more opportunities for business generation.

How to know when it is time to redesign your website?
Your website starts looking shabby compared to your competitors - It is a good practice to keep an eye on your competitor's online presence. If you cannot do it then assign the web design agency to do it for you. But if enough time has passed and your competitors are active online you will notice your site falling behind in terms of design and well as user friendliness.

Your website cannot keep up with new browser versions - With each new release of a popular browser like chrome, IE or Firefox certain functionalities on the site such as dropdown menus, JavaScript effects etc. tend to break down unless upgraded. The site literally starts falling apart technically with errors cropping up all over the place. Time to redesign the website.

You are still using huge dollops of Flash effects - For those not in the know; Flash is out, HTML5 and Jquery is in. Aided by the body blow from Apple (IOS devices don't allow Flash), designers are moving away from Flash towards newer more browser friendly technologies like HTML5 & Jquery which many of the same effects as Flash minus the overhead.

Your website does not have a Content Management System - Still uploading and downloading HTML files on your website. Its old news. Switch over to the super efficient content management system which allows your website to be updated literally in seconds. No need to maintain hundreds of messy files. Simply login and edit the site content.

Your site is search engine invisible - Many websites are designed without a thought to search engine friendliness or at most SEO is an afterthought. This low visibility costs you business online. Even if you do hire a SEO firm like Seogolin.com to promote your site they will find it difficult to do much without a search engine friendly site.

You are bored with your site - Believe it or not this is a good reason to redesign. Imagine if you are bored with your site, how must your customers feel? Boring sites are quite prevalent on the net. They add very little value to the business or to the customer. At best they act as a quick reference point for clients looking for the company address or services list. No engagement equals less business.

Best Practices for A Web Design Company In India

Whenever I discuss standards and best practices for web design companies in India I am greeted with the same refrain - web design companies are innovative and follow their own paths. The implication is that by applying standards somehow we will loose our creative edge.

But are standards needed? A well known member of the online community in India recently told me he is considering giving the redesign work of his website outside India. He has completely lost faith in the web design community in India. And can you blame him? Today being a web designer in India is not considered respectable at all. Countless cases of bad service, non delivery and outright cheating by web designers in India fueled this bad reputation.

My father has a favorite saying in Gujarati which I shall translate into English - 'One person's mistakes/sins can hinder/obstruct a hundred'. Due to unscrupulous dealings of a few, all web designers are painted with the same brush. There are web designers in India who are doing superb work and are trying tirelessly to build reputations and create a body of great work. To make sure these efforts are not going in vain we need to create a set of standards and best practices which can be followed without harming innovation or creativity.

will actually boost it.

Deliver your services strictly within the timelines you promised
Web designers should build a safety margin into the timeline they quote to the client and then move heaven and earth to deliver within this

The no.1 complaint about web designers in India today is delay in delivery. We have heard horror stories of how even simple projects have been delayed and a 15 day job takes 2-3 months or more. This is simply unacceptable.

In our experience many times the delays happen at the clients end. This can be mitigated by outlining the client deliverables at the outset and clearly communicating to the client that he/she too has the responsibility to deliver from their end. We have dropped clients who have failed to cooperate and provide material on time. Integrity should be from both sides.

Under-Promise and Over-Deliver - Don't promise clients the moon.
Due to the very competitive nature of our business web designers tend to promise anything and everything to the clients to get the job. Needless to say that the expectations are so high that the fall is inevitable. It is better to under promise the client and delight him by over delivering on it. Set realistic expectations from the outset.

I must admit in the early days I used to do the same with great enthusiasm but over the years I have learnt to curb this tendency, bite my tongue, and give the clients a very realistic and feasible picture. This also builds reputation as you deliver over and over.

Getting your people interested and involved in your business website

Are your people into your website? Some ways to get your business team to be more involved with your website.
I see it all the time, companies have a great website which they have paid a great deal to get made but hardly any employee is interested in it. There is no buy in internally and nobody from your company visits the site.

That begs the question, isn't your website for customers and prospects and not for employees? That is partly true; a website is a powerful sales tool. But it can also be an equally powerful tool to utilize in-house to evangelize the business, its goals and values and to keep employees updated.

So how do you get employee buy in?
1. Appoint a WEBSITE CHAMPION.
Someone who is enthusiastic about the internet and has a bit of tech savvy can take on the role of the 'Website Champion'. This person's responsibility would be to act as a cheerleader for the website (and for all related digital marketing efforts) within the company. The success of the website externally and also internally must be made his/her responsibility and must be a significant part of his/her KRA.

An important point to note is that this must be a volunteer position as it requires a lot of energy and enthusiasm from the person and cannot be dumped on just anyone. The 'website champion' must really be a Champion in every sense of the word.

2. Top Management must buy-in and evangelize it to the rest.
If the top management realizes the power of the website they will enthusiastically promote it within the company themselves. The website can be a powerful tool to talk about the management's position on a variety of issues and communicate directly to employees. However they do have to push the site in their day to day activities either by mentioning it often or posting critical information on it regularly which brings me to my next point.

3. The website must be used daily in all the business activities.
A portion of the site can be cordoned off and available only to employees either through a password protected system or via a VPN system only accessible in the office. This part of the site can used in the day to day working of the business by uploading critical information and tools. The idea is that the more the website is used in the day to day activities the more likely are the employees to reach for it when they need information.

Now some might argue that there is no reason to use the site in their business but that is just a lack of imagination. Like customers, employees must also be enticed onto the site till it becomes a habit for them.

4. Using the website as an important part of the training programme for new employees.
Putting a part of the training programme online and asking employees to use it for learning can become a great introduction of the website to them and also conveys to new hires, the importance of the website in the overall business scheme. It will also habituate employees to turn to the website for information from early on.

5. Appointing an agency to provide interesting information on the site and update it regularly.
You can turn the website into a company magazine by hiring an agency to develop unique and interesting content for your website. This content can range from interesting articles to games and offers the employees can take part in. The agency ensures that the site is always buzzing with new content and initiatives and also frees employees from the task of maintaining it which might not be there area of expertise.
