GoDaddy And Square Recast SMB Payments

As the web hosting provider of choice for literally millions of small- and medium-sized businesses, GoDaddy faces the same challenge that all players face when serving the SMB market: tailoring their services in a way that can reach an incredibly diverse batch of businesses.

According to Greg Goldberg, GoDaddy’s VP of commerce and email, the desire to go online is one of the few common threads among the handcrafted jam maker who slings boysenberry preserves online and at farmers markets, the 500-person software startup that does $30 million a year in sales, the brand-new fashion eTailer with six employees and the family-owned landscaping business.

It’s a diversity that Goldberg said GoDaddy has embraced under the rubric of “unlocking SMB value” by offering an array of interchangeable and customizable options that fit a diverse set of customer needs. GoCentral, Goldberg said, is GoDaddy’s latest addition to that lineup.

“GoCental is a new website builder that aims to solve a few key problems for small businesses as they go online,” Goldberg said. “It offers a number of website modules and designs tailored to a variety of business verticals that can be easily customized for a specific SMB.”

Goldberg said that when an SMB signs up for GoCentral, the very first thing they see is a screen that asks them two questions: the name of the business and what it does. Based on those two data points, GoCentral presents a menu of options, modules, images and capabilities that they are most likely to need, including email marketing tools, direct SMS tie-in and plug-ins to generate supportive social media pages.

“We don’t just want to be about building better sites, because there’s no point to building out a perfectly functional, beautiful site if the small business doesn’t know how to attract, retain and engage an audience.” Not to mention how to allow those consumers to easily pay for their services.

This week, GoDaddy has further extended the functionality of GoCentral with a new partnership with Square.

The Power Of Partnering With Square, Part One

GoDaddy’s integration with Square makes it easier for SMBs operating in both the online and offline worlds to integrate payments powered by Square directly into their GoDaddy sites.

“One of the biggest trends we’ve seen in commerce today is the pressing need for merchants of all sizes to be able to offer multichannel solutions,” Goldberg said. “We have heard from loads of product sellers and service providers who want to sell easily in both the real world and online, and have those systems really sync up.”

The integration with Square is about allowing those SMBs to do just that.

Goldberg said that GoCentral is tailored for the tech and design novice, making it easy for emerging startups to move into the world of eCommerce and digital marketing – without having to know how to code or to understand a lick about the technical integrations needed to enable a variety of cross-channel payment options. The Square integration, he said, is to open the world of omnicommerce to these SMBs while keeping it “push button simple” for the SMB.

The Power of Partnering With Square, Part Two

While most people think of products and online shops when they think SMBs, 80 percent of SMBs are actually service providers – think beauty parlors, contractors, dog walkers, accountants, lawyers and landscapers. Getting paid involves a lot more than simply processing a payment. What these businesses need, Goldberg explained, are the functions that wrap around the payment, things like booking and managing reservations or bookings, billing and accounting for no shows and generating appointment reminders and follow ups – all of which are the point solutions that SMBs have to go elsewhere to get, and then spend the time to integrate with each other and with payments.

GoCentral’s new scheduling feature – which Square is now tied into – is designed with the goal of taking all that friction out by creating a process where it is easy to sync calendars and make payments happen at the time of the appointment.

“What we have done with Square is provide the ability for the merchant to take the full payment required at the time of appointment, or collect a deposit – even cash on delivery,” Goldberg said, adding that the GoCentral scheduling feature is meant to be completely customizable, so that maintaining the schedule isn’t a massive problem for the customer or the merchant.

GoCentral’s end game, Goldberg noted, is to keep SMBs from having to stitch together a lot of payments solutions or business solutions but to have them available in a single “toolbox” where those functions can not only be managed, but also tailored to the unique needs of the businesses as they grow.

“We’re hitting on a number of cylinders that are very important to small business,” Goldberg offered, “and we’re really excited about working with Square to expand the types of value we can create for small business(es).”

And while he had no new specifics to offer, he did note there is “more to come” in 2018.

Custom Web Design Vs Website Templates: Which One You Should Choose?

Do you need a new website for your business? If yes, then there are a number of factors to consider and many choices to be made. One of them is whether to go for a custom web design or a website template. This leaves us with an important question to be asked...

“Why would I pay a web developer to build a custom website for me when I can buy a website template?”

Before we answer that question, it is important for you to understand the pros and cons of both custom web design and website template.

This article will provide you with a comparison that will make it easier for you to choose what is best for your business.

    Custom Web Design

Advantages of Custom Web Design

The biggest advantage of getting a custom web design is that it will make your website stand out from the crowd and give you a competitive edge over your competitors, which is very important in today’s saturated web environment. Custom websites are more search engine friendly than website templates so they tend to rank higher on search engine.

Not only does a custom website adapt to your business needs in a better way but it also gives you the room for incorporating your company’s branding into it. There is a factor of scalability with custom websites and they grow as your business grows. Moreover, the additional benefit of a content management system (CMS) makes it easier for the business to keep the website updated from anywhere.

Disadvantages of Custom Web Design

A custom web design will put a bigger dent in your pocket than a website template so you will have to pay more to get a custom web design. Secondly, it takes longer to create a custom design as compared to a website template. Due to the complex and time consuming process of custom web design, there are chances that your website project will be subject to delays.

Now, let us look at the website templates and the pros and cons attached to it...

    Website Templates

Advantages of Website Templates

Unlike a custom designed website, a website template has a shorter development cycle. Another benefit of using a website template is that it cost less so if you have a low budget, you can still get a website template. You do not need to be a coding whiz to create a website anymore, thanks to website templates. Even a person who does not know HTML and CSS can create a website template.

Disadvantages of Website Templates

With website templates being easily available online, there are chances that your competitors and other businesses are also using the same website template that you are using. Due to this, your website will be lost in the cyberspace and look like a rip-off.

Website templates are not designed with search engines in mind so they linger at the bottom of the search rankings. The poor support and browser compatibility is also a major issue associated with website templates.

When you buy a website template, you could not customize it according to your needs. Fitting web elements such as images, videos and texts is challenging with website templates.

Who Should Get a Custom Web Design?

Every business has different needs. If you want a website that is scalable, search engine-friendly and unique, then a custom web design is an ideal choice. The added benefit of a CMS is that it saves you some money on keeping your website updated and well maintained. Although, it might take longer and cost you more, but you will get a website according to your business needs and will deliver an exceptional user experience to your website visitors.

Who Should Purchase A Website Template?

If you are on a tight budget and do not have much time to spend on lengthy and complicated web design processes, then a website template is for you. If you are not sure about which web design will suit your business needs, then it is better to invest in a website template. A website template is also a good option for those who do not know web programming but want to create a website.

Conclusion

It usually comes down to your business needs and personal preferences that will influence your choice between a website template and custom web design. Would you go for a custom web design or a website template? If you know about any other factor that will help readers in making the right choice, then feel free to share it with us in comments section below.

The Financial Cost of Computer Hacking

The increasing incidents of cyber attacks all over the world have compelled everyone to know about their financial affects. The financial costs of computer hacking can be interpreted not only in terms of monetary loss but also as the loss of employment opportunities. Though it is not easy to calculate the exact cost of computer hacking around the world still as per recent studies it can be about $440 along with the loss of over 500,000 jobs every year. Brief information provided here under in this regard will help you to know more about the financial costs of hacking computers.

Financial effect of cyber attack as per its type: Hackers popularly use three types of cyber attacks, DDoS or Distributer Denial of Services, ransomware and spear phishing. In DDoS, a website is flooded with traffic to shut it down by overloading its server. In 2013 nearly 60% companies were affected with this type of computer hacking. In ransomware, a computer is infected with malware to encrypt files and demanding ransom for unlocking them. In 2013 more than 8,000 ransom attacks were recorded. In spear phising, the criminals use a familiar email address to send you an email to know your personal information and to imitate someone known to you. Mining industry was most affected than any other industry from spear phising as over 40% out of 83% companies affected by spear phising attacks were from this industry during 2014. The estimated annual cost of these cyber attacks in US is nearly $100 billion.

Two way financial impact of cyber crime: On one hand cyber criminals are stealing not only your data but also billions of dollars from the financial institutions and on the other hand companies are spending huge money for their safety from these attackers. According to recent studies nearly $1 billion has been stolen from over 100 financial companies situated in different countries like Germany, US, China and Ukraine etc during last two years. Similarly around $75 billion have been spending globally on security form cyber attacks so far during this year. The estimated cost of cyber security by 2020 can be nearly $170 billion, calculated at 10% growth rate.

Loss of jobs: The cost of computer hacking cannot be calculated only on the basis of money stolen or snatched by the hackers but also on the basis of loss of jobs due to these attacks. As per latest studies every year nearly 500,000 jobs are lost in US due to these cyber attacks. According to researchers the real threat of these cyber attacks becomes obvious when the data of a company is stolen by its competitor as ultimately it compels the company to go out o business. In fact the sales of a company go down when its competitor makes a product after stealing its intellectual property worth millions of dollars. This ultimately ends up in loss of jobs in the company.

Increase in the cost of cyber security: According to recent studies by Symantec Inc – creator of Norton antivirus and Norton internet security - it has been estimated that by 2019 the cost of security from computer hacking can increase up to $2 trillion. Several market experts are of the view that the wave of cyber attacks has taken the shape of an Epidemic during last few years despite the increasing use of discount deals like the known norton coupon codes which have increased the antivirus use.

Today cyber crime is considered as the greatest threat on almost every business in this world. As per the estimates submitted in Wall Street journal, three years earlier the cost of cyber crime in US was up to $100 billion every year. A British company estimated the annual cost on businesses in 2015 to be around $400 billion in which direct loss of money and after effect of the attack on the business are included. The figures of the cost were estimated by several media companies and vendors during past few years to be more than $500 billion.

In this way, computer hacking is not only increasing the loss of finances and jobs but also stimulating the market of products and services used for the security from cyber criminals. The market of cyber-security products and services in US is estimated to grow over $175 billion in 2020 which was $75 in 2015. Similarly, increasing rate of cyber crimes has also encouraged the market of cyber insurance as its estimated growth by 2020 can rise up to $7.5 billion from $ 2.5 billion in 2015. Hence the financial cost of computer hacking is increasing day-by-day, which is a matter of great concern for every business around the world.

Top Web Design Trends To Look Forward To In Q4 2017

In today’s fiercely competitive market, presenting and marketing the business idea successfully in front of customers plays an important role. One of the tools for doing this is the strategic ‘Web design’ process. Web design is a field that requires varied skills, disciplines, and essential tools for the production and maintenance of websites. Considering the ever-evolving nature of the digital world, it’s imperative to keep a pulse on the ongoing web design trends. Here are the latest web design trends that are going to define Q4 in 2017…

Excellent Layout Features

One of the important web design trends to look out for in 2017 is the layout features of the web designing process including the web graphic design, user experience design, User Interface, Website Strategy etc. Since the well-designed web design services help the business owners in establishing a strong online presence, it is essential to build a resource pool of web design tips, free graphic ideas, website templates etc that every website and web designer should follow.
Here are some of the basic principles to make good web design using the resource pool that will continue to define the web design space of 2017:
  • Clarity in terms of Colour, Images and Grid system: To make a crisp and sharp web design, it is important to consider the web templates, alignment, relevant images, and colouring etc.
  • Safe web fonts: It is imperative to consider the fact that there are few fonts which are supported by most browsers which makes font selection a key factor while making the good web design.
  • Web graphics and usability: One of the important principles of web design is the intelligent use of web graphics and its usability. The web page should be made in a way that is easy to use without unnecessary cluttering.

Grid Layout & Card Design

This is another definite web design trends to watch out for in the last quarter of 2017. One of the golden rules in any good web design is how crisp and sharp the design is. Have you taken into consideration alignment, relevant images, and colouring, manually clean up of extra line, shape, and boxes, appropriate grids to make the content looks simpler and easy to read & understand? It is all about the experience you are giving the users and it all comes down to these basics.
Grid layouts in the web design are particularly suitable for pages with an abundance of data, as they help in making the information more accessible, and aesthetically pleasing. The card design layouts will be a big part of the web design trends this year with a focus on a lot more dynamic grid style in 201. A good web design agency will always adhere to standards, keeps basics in place and understand the business thoroughly. They work towards the purpose of building a brand and delivering information in a technically sound and visually coherent way but also make the website designing a fun process.

Conversational Interfaces & AI Powered Bots

When it comes to of visuals, bots are unlikely to have a big impact on web design; however, they will significantly influence how designers think about creating websites. The conversational interfaces and AI powered bots are going to dominate the web design services, empowering businesses to automate communication and sales in the long run. The online businesses will be able to leverage various tools such as Letsclap, Pixlr etc to connect with their customers via messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or WeChat, providing customised customer support and commerce solutions.

The Use Of Cinemagraphs

Cinemagraphs are yet another interesting trend of 2017 to watch out for. The Cinemagraphs are the high-quality videos or GIFs that run on a smooth, continuous loop to provide an all immersive web design experience. They have become a pretty popular way to add movement and visual interest to otherwise static and mundane web pages.

Illustrations

More and more brands are experimenting with the illustrations to add liveliness to their web pages. The illustrators and graphic artists have the expertise to create bespoke illustrations for the websites, which is an interesting trend of this year to look for. To break the monotony of the flat design and minimalism in the websites, adding illustrated touches is an excellent way to achieve a sophisticated web page.

Experimenting With Horizontal & Vertical Text

To achieve a great web design, the qualified web design agencies are exploring the idea of mixing horizontal and vertical text. This concept of freeing text from its usual horizontal alignment and placing it vertically on a page adds a certain uniqueness and a refreshing dimension to the web page.
Web design services involves a complex process of achieving a design that is relevant, user-friendly and pleasing. There are different areas of web design including web graphic design, user experience design, AI powered bots etc that will continue to be the top trends of 2017 in web design space. To achieve better outcomes with this entire process, it is essential to keep a tab on the market and hire a web design agency with the deep understanding of the market and creativity in the working style

From high school to boardroom: How Sask. students are creating corporate websites

Regina website firm hiring high school students

Youth are the future and a Regina company is bringing the future into the boardroom.

Jeph Maystruck from Strategy Lab Marketing launched a web development and design company called Cupcakes and Websites last December, and has been attracting new talent to move the company forward.

The talent is so new they haven't even received their high school diploma.

Big Idea Camp inspires Regina teens to become entrepreneurs

Regina teacher, students promote free hugs for non-profit

One day after speaking about his tech business at a high school, he received a text from a student asking for a job interview.

That's when it clicked, he says.

He had spent four years presenting to high school students using the same material he pitches to corporations, but didn't consider that those classes could hold the next best tech prodigies.

"Of course I gave him the interview and he nailed it," Maystruck told CBC News.
Younger workforce moves in

Cupcakes and Websites now employs two high school students, and are finalizing a contract with a third. The websites come at a cost of $1,257, plus tax.

Maystruck said he trains the teens for three months, paying them $15 an hour throughout the process. Once they are hired, they receive $20 an hour.

When they have finished school, Maystruck has hopes of of hiring them on at his company or at least giving them the skills they need to be self-sustaining entrepreneurs.

But he's not bringing them on as a favour.

Maystruck said he believes the future of business isn't about hiring from other countries, but instead turning to youth, many of whom already possess indispensable skills.

He said he was talking with another business owner who said he was hiring someone from Germany to help with a website problem.

"I get offended when people want to keep hiring people overseas and they don't want to trust our younger generation," Maystruck said. "I want Canada to be a leader — and call it the silicon prairie — but we can be a leader in this and we're championing this, we're not just saying it.

"We're going to double down on this younger generation."

Now, the high school students Maystruck has hired are making company websites for clients, and because their work is online, they don't need to be in the office to do it.
Sweet treats

And as if their company isn't unique enough, the web designers hand deliver a batch of homemade cupcakes to clients as a thank you.

Maystruck said they incorporated this delicious dose of kindness because he believes cooking is becoming a lost skill.

But don't worry if you don't have a sweet tooth. Clients who decide not to have the cupcakes can choose a not-for-profit and the cupcakes are delivered there, instead.

"It's the sweetest company in Canada," Maystruck said.

IT consultant kick-starts his career with an apprenticeship

A FORMER IT support worker who left school at 16 and struggled to find his vocation has finally managed to kick-start his career in web development after starting an apprenticeship.

Jaimie Warburton, of Caerphilly, has always had an interest in IT and web development but since leaving school found it difficult to get his career on track.

After working as an IT support officer at a variety of different businesses, Mr Warburton became despondent about his career and craved the opportunity to get his foot in the door of a web design company, however without any formal qualifications in web development or relevant work experience he struggled to secure a job.

He decided to go freelance for a short period of time in order to gain some experience and before long came across the opportunity to do a Level Four apprenticeship in Front-End Web Development with IT Pie in Penarth.

Now 12 months on, thanks to IT Pie, Sgil Cymru and the Welsh Government, the 28-year-old is on the road to completing his apprenticeship and becoming a fully-qualified web developer with a bright future ahead of him.

He said: “The course has been absolutely brilliant. I have received so much support and guidance from my colleagues who have taught me all the technical terms and language. It’s been great to be able to apply everything I’m learning at college to real-life situations every day.

“I finish the apprenticeship in September and will become a fully-qualified web developer. I feel like my career is finally taking off.

“I’d definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship. I didn’t even think they were available in things like web design, I thought you had to go to university to work in web development and coding, but that’s not the case. It’s been a brilliant way of gaining hands-on practical experience as well as all the relevant skills and qualifications.”

Geraint Rhys-Jones at IT Pie said: “Jaimie is a real natural at web development and regularly contributes great ideas during the design phase, ensuring the best user experience and that the websites we build are modern and engaging, using the best transitions and animations. He is also hard-working and dedicated and I’m sure he has a bright future ahead of him.”

For more information about becoming an apprentice, visit careerswales.com

The Apprenticeship Programme in Wales is funded by the Welsh Government with support from the European Social Fund.

Young, enterprising & quick off the blocks

PUNE: Early starters juggle books and businesses as they aspire to set up future brands Ambitious is a word that strongly describes Yashna Dave, a 21-year old student of graphic design who has been running two small businesses. Her first venture -The House of Whims -is a range of handmade jewellery. The second one, Cattywampus Design Works, is actually an upand-coming design firm. Both ventures are responsible for a steady Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 every month. For enterprises that need just a few hours of attention from a 21-year-old, those are significant sums.

"I have always been enterprising and almost always, a one-woman army . Fresh out of school, I started an upcycling venture called The Garage Sale. I would collect all sorts of recyclable waste from different locations and create something out of them. They would then be put up for sale. So, from creating jewellery out of electric cables to lamps out of bottles and discarded cans, I've done it all," says the student of P.A. Inamdar College of Visual Effects, Design & Art.

Design was always the first love for Yashna and she hopes to make it big in the field.

"It combines my two favouring pasttimes -lazing around and creating usable objects from the scratch. I can sit at one spot for hours and at the end of it, I would've created something. As for design, I scour the Web for open source software I can train myself on." Yashna is currently pursuing a degree in graphics and animation -a fast growing sector that's riding high on the world's need for creative products. In fact, firms are reaching out to student freelancers like Yashna for event-related projects.

"My first project was for an event in Hinjewadi. I was nervous and worked day and night to perfect my designs. The fact that my work was well received encouraged me to dive deeper into the industry and learn more. I have now started taking up freelance projects for clients looking for logo designs, brochures, pamphlets, etc. I keep my rates nominal because I wish to support start-ups," says Yashna.

Family support, she says, has helped her juggle education and entrepreneurship.

"It isn't easy to handle books and a business. I'm grateful I have patient clients and parents." The youngster then, is part of a wave of re sponsible small businesses mushrooming across the country. A typical day for this , lot starts early and ends late -a schedule that rarely shifts.

"Why do it do it? Because I absolutely love the sense of independence," says Yashna.

The Benefits of Having An eCommerce Business

Many people are moving from physical stores to buy goods and services online. Ecommerce can simply be defined as the activity of doing business activities online, which involves buying and selling products and services through a website. Consumers are increasingly choosing this method of shopping because it is convenient.

Apart from the fact that an online store allows consumers to shop from the comfort of their own homes 24/7, unlike a brick and mortar store which is open for a set number of hours, there are many other benefits of having an eCommerce business. In collaboration with PayU, we have listed five of them below.

1. Build an online presence

Statistics show that more than 80% of the online population has used the internet to purchase something. We’re in an era where your customers expect your services to be available online. And if they aren’t, your audience will be searching for an alternative – who is your competitor – to make an online purchase.

2. Provide customers with comprehensive information

An eCommerce site allows you to provide shoppers with detailed information on products, which customers appreciate, as they can then make informed buying choices. From the product description to customer reviews and a returns policy, you can provide as much information as you want. Customers can view ingredients and get background information about the product’s manufacturers, which is difficult to do in physical stores.

3. Save on running costs

Operating an eCommerce business can actually save you money, as the overall cost of maintaining an online store is far less than that of a brick and mortar store. You can reduce labour, and cut down expenses in many other ways such as in overtime and supervision expenses. Ecommerce gives staff members time to concentrate on profit-generating activities.

4. Attract new customers
An immense number of people search the internet every day to find products that they want to buy. With a physical store, it’s next to impossible to reach such a huge market. However, with an eCommerce store you can easily reach these shoppers while also offering them the convenience of various online payment solutions to pay for their purchases. An online store enables a business to reach many more consumers than it would with physical stores.

5. Capture the buying habits of your customers

A website can capture the movements of each person who visits the site, including the items that a shopper viewed, the pages that were clicked, as well as all the products that were bought. This information can give you more insight into what your customers desire the most, so that you’re able to meet all your customers’ needs. As a result, they will be happy and keep coming back.

Without an online presence, you’re limiting the potential for growth; eCommerce is no longer an option for today’s businesses.

Do not let the terror design to escalate

We condemn the terrorist attack that killed seven pilgrims in Anantnag while they were returning from Amarnath. While the loss of innocent lives is tragic, it is heartening that there has been unqualified condemnation of the attack from across the political spectrum in Jammu and Kashmir and outside.

Attacking pilgrims is against Kashmiri culture and against self-interest. Pilgrims are an important sub-segment of tourists, giving whom bed and board sustains many livelihoods in the state. Does the current attack portend a new terrorist policy of targeting civilians? This seems unlikely. This is not the first time Amarnath pilgrims have come under attack. In 2000, terrorists had killed 21 pilgrims and injured 30. There has been no recurrence of such an attack since then, till this Monday.

To prevent further attacks, security forces must step up intelligence gathering and follow-up action. The bus that came under attack had not registered with the Amarnath Shrine Trust and thus did not enjoy any security cover. Bus operators who put lives at danger by offering services outside those sanctioned and supervised by the relevant authorities must face stringent action. The bus driver Salim has been praised and rewarded for driving the bus out of the terrorists’ range, after the initial burst of firing. But he should also face questions as to why he risked lives by ferrying pilgrims around in an unregistered, unguarded vehicle. Rules meant for safety of the pilgrims must meet with full compliance.

In India’s current febrile political atmosphere, it is vital for political parties and governments to send out a clear signal that what happened in Anantnag will stay in Anantnag and that no attempt to retaliate against innocents in other parts of the country would be tolerated.

CORPORATE INNOVATION TOUR

The following is from the latest print edition of Fortune, where I write a regular column about technology and startups called “Boom with a View.”

It’s also the second installment of Term Sheet’s series on corporate innovation efforts. (See the first one here.)

When entering an unfamiliar society, it is wise to learn the local customs, the unspoken rules, and the names of its heroes, villains, and gods.

The same rule applies to Startup Land. To an outsider, the world of venture-backed startups might feel impenetrable. But don’t despair: The Internet is littered with free guides to The Startup Way. Look first to the luminaries known by their acronyms: PG, TK, @AVC, a16z. (That would be Y Combinator founder Paul Graham, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, Union Square Ventures partner Fred Wilson, and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.) Follow their blogs, listen to their podcasts, repeat their catchphrases, learn the Acronymed Ones’ acronyms. (FNAC stands for “feature, not a company.” HENRY means “high earner, not rich yet.”) You can even consume precious nuggets of startup wisdom through mobile push notifications thanks to products like Startup Funding Bot, Startup Patterns, Startup Quotes, and the website Great Fucking Startup Advice. (Sample counsel: “Don’t ask for permission, ask for fucking forgiveness.”)

Startup Land’s collective knowledge is one part mythology, one part advice, one part inspiration, and zero parts business school–sanctioned case study. (As universities add courses on entrepreneurship, Peter Thiel pays students to drop out.) Its catchphrases have been repeated so much that they are now clichéd punch lines, oversimplified to the point of meaninglessness.

But that doesn’t mean they’re not true. So what happens when a piece of startup gospel is flat-out wrong?

I recently found myself carelessly repeating a statistic that I’d heard dozens of times in private conversations and on public stages: “Nine out of 10 startups fail.” The problem? It’s not true. Cambridge Associates, a global investment firm based in Boston, tracked the performance of venture investments in 27,259 startups between 1990 and 2010. Its research reveals that the real percentage of venture-backed startups that fail—as defined by companies that provide a 1X return or less to investors—has not risen above 60% since 2001. Even amid the dotcom bust of 2000, the failure rate topped out at 79%.

Yet the denizens of Startup Land continue to cite the 90% figure because it serves a purpose. It comforts failed startup founders who burned through their investors’ money, laid off staff, and shut down their companies. It supports the startup world’s celebration of failure. “Sure, you failed, but that’s the norm,” the thinking goes. “The odds were against you.”

But startup failure isn’t a natural law like gravity. It’s not a given. Normalizing the failure narrative only conceals the truth, misleads founders, and in certain cases, explains away bad behavior.

So here’s some wisdom of my own: Take a skeptical view of the widely accepted knowledge in Startup Land. It’s especially necessary in an environment where entrepreneurship is fetishized on television shows like Shark Tank, old-economy corporations are desperately trying to imitate their disrupters, and Fortune 500 execs are jumping ship to “unicorn” startups.

Soak up the mantras inside the Silicon Valley bubble. But do so with a grain of salt.

Force for good: Fortune is beginning to work on its third annual Change the World list, which highlights companies that have made measurable progress addressing global social problems as part of their core business strategy. If you’d like to nominate a company for the list, please email Fortune senior writer Erika Fry with a brief description of why it should be considered. Ben Clark learned his business skills from publishing mogul Felix Dennis

At 20-years-old, many people are beginning to think about what to do after finishing university, but not Falmouth’s Ben Clark.Ben owns website design company Netgems, and has a portfolio of clients ranging from big businesses to independent start-ups.But this isn’t Ben’s first business, as from the age of 14 he has stood on his own two feet and seized every opportunity presented to him.So much so, that he created a situation where he could meet millionaire publishing mogul Felix Dennis, who later became his mentor.

Over the years Ben has worked with local companies such as Freeriders, the Maritime Museum and Kelsall Steele Investment Services.

He has also worked with companies from outside the area, including Unique Cakes by Yevnig, Bathstore, and a range of London based businesses.

To complete his websites, Ben works with students at the university who help provide further graphic design talent to Netgems clients.

But he says that the inspiration to start a digital business, rather than print, came from his mentor, Felix, and Ben was able to pick up the practical skills from his uncle, Tim Clark, who founded online bathroom retailer TapStore.com.

Ben said: “I was 14 and had been obsessed with becoming an entrepreneur, and started a business called Refresh.

“It started out with me filling my school bag with fizzy drinks and snacks, and selling them to my friends.

“But within a couple of months, I was bulk buying food and drink and delivering it to students in each school year who would sell it for 20 per cent commission.

“Almost everyone in the school knew about it, and even the teachers were customers, it was a near monopoly and I felt rich already.

“The school didn’t want me doing that any more so they gave me money to start a magazine and that got me interested in Felix Dennis because he’s in publishing.

“I bought his book and did some research and found out he was a poet, so I booked a ticket to Stratford-upon-Avon to go to one of his shows and went around the back to meet his assistant.
“I gave them a bottle of whiskey and some cigars, with a note attached asking him to talk to me after the show, and he ended up inviting me to an afterparty.

“The party was full of millionaires, and Felix gave me his contact information, later I contacted him and we ended up meeting up a couple of times.

“He told me not to start a magazine, he told me it was stupid and advised me to give up on being nice and to give up everything and focus on what I’m doing.

Singapore: Digital marketing agency Disruptient merges with Dubai-based CreITive

Disruptient, a Singapore-based performance marketing agency, and CreITive, a global innovation agency headquartered in Dubai, have signed a strategic merger agreement in a move to offer 360-degree digital web and mobile solutions. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Disrupient and CrelTive have been working together for close to a year to offer their various service offerings in digital innovation, UI/UX design, web and mobile development, rapid prototyping solutions, and performance marketing to clients across Asia Pacific.

Dan Clarke, CEO of Disruptient, said, “I’m thrilled to be combining efforts with CreITive to bridge the gap between my two favourite cities, Dubai and Singapore, and combining our portfolios of companies across the private and public sector.”
Asked about financial terms of the deal, Clarke told this portal it was “mostly equity swap with a valuation in the 6 figures,” and structured as a cash and equity merger.

Clarke, the former Senior SEO for Groupon during its IPO, joins CreITive Singapore as Managing Director of its Asia Pacific operations. The Disruptient brand will be brought into the CreITive company, and it will continue to operate as a standalone subsidiary.

The new team will consist of approximately 45 employees across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The company plans to expand its operations in Asia Pacific by opening new development centres in Indonesia and Vietnam before the end of 2017.

“Our growth plans include building on existing client base of big name clients and adding performance marketing to the existing development work that CreITive does to offer a full end-to-end solution. Our competitive edge is our ability to get things done in very short time windows. We specialise in rapid prototyping and quick turn around,” said Clarke.

“This plus being locally based in SEA from day one and having a deep understanding of local markets, rather than applying western solutions over Asian market problems,” he added.
