Amazon Shares Hit $1,000, Showing Dominance of E-Commerce, Cloud

Amazon.com Inc.’s shares topped $1,000 for the first time, marking a new milestone for a company wooing investors by dominating online commerce and cloud computing.

Amazon shares hit $1,001.20 in New York Tuesday, up about 40 percent from a year ago and more than double the 15 percent gain of the S&P 500 Index in the same period. Investors are thinking about how much further Amazon can grow as it tries to replicate its U.S. success abroad.

The shares will likely push even higher since Amazon is growing so quickly in massive global industries that show no signs of slowing, as shopping habits change and businesses rethink how they deploy technology, said John Blackledge, analyst at Cowen and Company LLC, who recently upped his Amazon price target to $1,125 a share.

"There’s a long runway there," he said. "The markets Amazon is playing in with global retail and cloud computing are just massive. Things continue to go well and investors are looking for more upside."

The Seattle company’s $478 billion market value is double that of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. even though the world’s biggest retailer will have sales three times larger than Amazon’s this year. Investors put more value in Amazon’s web traffic and delivery network than they do in Wal-Mart’s vast store presence because online spending will grow more than four times faster than overall retail spending this year as shoppers continue to shift from stores to websites, according to EMarketer Inc.

The world’s largest online retailer is dominating e-commerce with its $99-a-year Amazon Prime subscription, which includes delivery discounts, music and video streaming and photo storage that keep shoppers engaged with the website. Seattle-based Amazon had 80 million Prime subscribers in the U.S. as of March 31, an increase of 38 percent from a year earlier, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. Prime memberships help lock in loyalty, which is critical as competitors such as Wal-Mart enhance their e-commerce offerings to slow Amazon’s momentum.

Amazon has been tackling retail one category at a time, disrupting bookstores and electronics stores first and more recently pushing into apparel and groceries. Its rise has coincided with the decline of prominent retail chains such as Macy’s Inc. and Sears Holdings Corp., which have shuttered stores and laid off workers in response to declining sales. Shopping malls have resorted to hosting concerts and carnivals in empty parking lots to keep customers coming.

Another Amazon advantage is its profitable and fast-growing cloud-computing division Amazon Web Services, which maintains a global network of data centers and rents out storage space and computing functions to clients in a variety of industries, including Netflix Inc. and Airbnb Inc. as well as Capital One Financial Corp. and the federal government. Yelp runs many of its functions on AWS. This year, companies around the world will funnel $246.8 billion to Amazon and other cloud services providers, according to Gartner, up 18 percent from 2016.

Amazon’s rise has made its founding Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos the world’s second wealthiest person, behind only Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His ascendancy has won praise from fellow self-made billionaires Warren Buffett and Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and judge on the television show "Shark Tank."

“Amazon is worth far more than $1,000 a share,” said Cuban, an Amazon investor. “Consumers always want things at lower prices delivered faster. Amazon uses data better than anyone to achieve those goals for everything it sells. They have a chance to be the most dominant company in the world.”

How to Implement Ecommerce Personalization

Personalization is a growing trend in ecommerce. Shoppers want to see relevant marketing, products, and offers. When they receive them, they typically respond by purchasing more.

The idea around personalization is compelling: Your store is treating each shopper like the unique person she is. However, implementing personalization can be difficult, complex, and error-prone. Getting it wrong can be bad.

Many companies sell personalization solutions. But without understanding the fundamentals, you might purchase something too complex to use.

In this article, I’ll explain the basics of how personalization works from a technical perspective, to demystify it. Hopefully you’ll see there’s no magic involved, and you can add it to your store.
How to Implement Personalization

I’ll describe personalization in terms of how to manage it in a backend server. Many companies use JavaScript (a frontend system) for this, especially if they have a hosted ecommerce platform or cannot otherwise modify the source code.

But the backend server way is easier to understand and the concepts apply to any other method.

You should understand four things:

    The visitor,
    The visitor’s past behavior,
    Personalization code,
    Experimenting and testing.

The visitor. The first thing to know is who the current visitor is. Also called the “identity,” this is just a bit of data that relates to a unique person.

Most backend systems can do this automatically through the use of HTTP cookies, which are small pieces of data that can associate the visitor with a specific customer or a unique but unknown shopper.

For example, a cookie might contain the data:

or

anonymous_user=f90c3b648d46.

One complexity with tracking the identity comes from multi-device web use, wherein one person could browse — during a single purchase session — on his work computer, his smartphone, and his iPad.

Ideally your system could identify that this customer is the same person and not three separate customers. Even if it can’t, you can still make personalization work.

Visitor’s past behavior. The second piece of data you need is the past behavior on the shopper.

This can be whatever is relevant, though most ecommerce stores focus on a few critical variables.

    Purchases. When purchases occurred, from where (geographically and virtually), and prices.

    Products. Which products were purchased; which ones they’ve added and removed from their cart; which ones they’ve viewed.

    Browsing. How the visitors came to your site; when was their first visit; when was their last visit; what pages they’ve seen; what offers they’ve seen.

There are plenty of options and choices here. As long as you can easily get the data to your personalization code, you can personalize based on any combination of the data.

Personalization code. Now that we can track visitors and what they’ve done, we can create logic or rules for the personalization. This can be simple or advanced — from a couple of rules or many.

Here’s a simple example in Ruby that toggles between three stages of a visitor:

    If someone is new to the store,
    If she has purchased previously,
    If she’s purchased this product previously.

Notice the logic is just a single if statement with the three personalization options.

    New visitors are welcomed.
    Existing customers are welcomed back by name.
    Existing customers who purchased the product are asked to leave a review.

Experimenting and testing. The final component is to brainstorm a list of personalization ideas to experiment with. You don’t have to try every idea, but you never know when you’ll find a real gem, one that drives conversions.

Think about a few areas of your store and how you could personalize them:

    Product pages,
    Calls to action, such as add to cart buttons,
    Anything in your primary conversion funnel

Searching online for A/B test ideas will usually turn up many things that could also work with personalization.

Finally if possible, create a control group of 10 to 50 percent of your visitors. These will be people who don’t see the personalization at all. Compared this group to your experimental group to prove if there was an improvement. Essentially, it’s an A/B personalization test

PM firm believer of political empowerment of people through economic development

HANGZHOU: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said he was the firm believer of political empowerment of people through economic development and would encourage e-commerce in the country as a tool to help small businesses go global.

Addressing the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding setting up an e-platform in Pakistan by China’s biggest e-commerce portal Alibaba, the prime minister said the initiative would help create jobs and generate livelihood in the country. He termed e-commerce a catalyst for bringing improvement in small and medium enterprises (SME) sector, which he said could help promote the disadvantaged segments of the society. He said digital transactions were a solution for small entrepreneurs to expand their businesses and reach global markets.

He expressed pleasure on meeting the founder and Executive Chairman of Alibaba Jack Ma following their last meeting at Davos this January and said he was impressed by the contribution of the e-commerce giant for the economic uplift of Chinese people.

The prime minister said Alibaba Group’s approach of helping out small business enterprisers had a humanistic dimension which was also the pivot of Pakistan government’s policies since 2013.

Nawaz appreciated Jack Ma for his intention to open an e-platform of Alibaba in Pakistan and said he had earlier directed his office to work out the formalities that resulted in signing of MoU within four months. He expressed hope that Alibaba Group would launch the project in Pakistan at the earliest.

Jack Ma, well-known for his successes in online trade and mobile payments said e-commerce had enormous potential to unlock growth in emerging markets. He said the future of e-commerce looked promising for small businesses and mentioned that nowadays, more and more such entities were incorporating e-commerce platforms as part of their business systems.

He said his company was closely monitoring the progress of Pakistan’s e-commerce sector and wanted to support small scale industries. He apprised the prime minister that Alibaba Group was facilitating 60 million companies across the globe and said that around 300,000 consumers from Pakistan had signed with Alibaba for transactions and company’s services.

Jack Ma lauded that small craft factories flourishing in Pakistan and mentioned the country’s world famous products particularly footballs and Himalayan pink salt.

He emphasized that paying special attention to the youth in Pakistan, being two-third of country’s population, could make them more productive for national economy.

Amazon injects $10.5 mn into India payment arm

E-commerce major Amazon India’s payments portal Amazon Pay has received funding worth Rs 67 crore ($10.46 million) from its Singapore-based arm Amazon Corporate Holdings Pvt Ltd and its US-based parent Amazon Inc, filings with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) show.

The payments arm, which is operated by Amazon Online Distribution Services Pvt Ltd, has also been rebranded to Amazon Pay (India) Pvt Ltd., documents filed with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) show.

Amazon India’s decision to change the name of its online payment portal was effected through an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) held by its board in March this year.

The change in the name makes it clear that Amazon wants to cast its net wide and does not intend to restrict itself to wallet transactions on its platform alone. Incidentally, the change comes close on the heels of the e-commerce company getting a wallet license from the Reserve Bank of India in March.
“We recently launched Amazon Pay where customers can fund their pre-paid balance using Internet banking and credit or debit card for purchases. With this, customers can go cashless and enjoy fast and easy checkouts, quicker refunds coupled with a secured shopping experience only on Amazon.in,” a spokesperson from the e-commerce firm said.

The development was first reported by The Economic Times.

Amazon’s rising focus on digital payments can be gauged from recent developments at the firm. The authorised share capital of Amazon Online Distribution Services was recently hiked from Rs 69 crore to Rs 400 crore, according to filings with the RoC. Besides, in February, it bought Noida-based payment gateway firm Emvantage, marking its first acquisition in India.

Prior to this, the company already had launched Amazon Pay Balance, a closed mobile wallet that was restricted to transactions only on Amazon. However, despite a large captive user base, it is yet to be seen how Amazon Pay will take off, as the company has entered a space already teeming with many players.

Amazon has made no bones of its intent to capture the dominant slice of the lucrative Indian e-commerce pie after it lost to local players in China, currently considered as one of the world’s most consumer-centric market.

While announcing Amazon’s first-quarter results last month, Jeff Bezos deemed India as one of the company’s fastest growing markets. “It’s still Day 1 for e-commerce in India, and I assure you that we’ll keep investing in technology and infrastructure while working hard to invent on behalf of our customers and small and medium businesses in India,” he had said.

Amazon, which entered India in 2013, invested $2 billion in the country’s operations in 2014. It committed an additional $3 billion in June last year, taking the total investment in the country to $5 billion.

Amazon is deepening its India play, going beyond e-commerce. It has ventured into the beauty services segment, launched video-streaming service Amazon Video Prime, and introduced a programme for startups, Launchpad, to market its products to customers across the country.

Here's why brands are increasingly choosing digital only video ad campaigns for marketing purpose

While we have heard brands as well as ad agencies state several times the importance of the digital medium in the advertising world. However, barring a few exceptions, we have instead majorly seen TV ads which are retrofitted to digital platforms. It is not until recently that we have seen brands increasingly creating ads exclusively for the digital medium, weaving content marketing into them.

These long 3 minute to even 5 minute ads are specifically created and suited to digital media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, among others. Many of these brands refrain from a shorter version of these ads on TV as common sense tells that you cannot cram a 3 minute ad into 30 seconds without losing the intended effect of the ad film.

Some e digital ad campaigns which have worked well recently include P&G's Vicks 'Touch of Care' ad campaign on the depiction of the story behind Indian transgender activist Gauri Sawant and her adopted daughter Gayatri, Paperboat's 'My first train ride' which takes us to railway journey's to our grandparents place during summer vacations, Nissan India's 'An Unexpected Vistor on the Pitch', Samsung's India Service ad, Google's 'Code it Possible' ad and Red Lable's 'Taste of Togetherness' campaign.
Why digital video ad campaigns

It is not only these brands that have come out with only digital ad campaigns, but there are many others too that have taken this step. Brands no longer seemed to be wanting to work under the time constraint that comes with the TV medium.

Parvesh Debuka, Marketing Head, Hector Beverages said, "Digital is something where we have always been building content around. Our previous films are also exclusively for digital. TV has its set of advantages and ease of access. And digital has its advantages and ease of access. This long story format which we use, where we are allowed to use 3-4 minutes of storytelling time I think digital allows you to do more stories like that."

Ahmed Naqvi, CEO & Co-founder of digital agency Gozoop said that the flexibility and the no time constraints of the platform is the reason that brands are creating digital first video ad campaigns. "Most brands are now realizing that their audience is now there on digital platforms. It enable to them to target their audience accurately and gives them the RoI they look for. Digital first campaigns allow them to understand what is working and not working immediately. This allows them to correct their marketing campaign and make any course corrections, which is not possible in any other medium. We have a lot of clients that come to us for digital first video campaigns. If it works on digital then some of them even think about taking it to TV."

Besides the time constants are the higher costs of the TV medium in comparison to digital. As TV ads are priced as per 10 seconds and could cost Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh on some of the highest rated channels and shows, it is one of the most expensive mediums. So are the costs something to factor in?

Naqvi said that this is not the primary motive why brands are turning to creating digital video ads. "Some of the brands we work with spend the same money on digital as they would on a TV ad campaign. In terms of production values too digital video ads are the same level as mainline TV ads.

Even promotion ad rates on digital platforms have increased significantly over the last few years. The reason brands are choosing digital as it gives them flexibility in time and course correction. Brands get reactions from people and comments which enable them to make changes in the campaign immediately. Digital video ad campaigns are also a series of ads which run for a longer period, over weeks at times."
More digital video ads using content marketing

Keeping the format and the costs aside, most importantly brands and marketers in India seem to be understanding what is content marketing and how the digital medium truly works. Content marketing by definition is creating and sharing content that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its product or services. The magic words here are 'content that does not explicitly promote a brand'. And content marketing, if done right, works wonderfully on an interactive medium such as digital.

Yet you will find many brand managers or marketers brag at advertising conferences that they "engage" their customers through content marketing on digital, when essentially what they do is create content to push their brand or product heavily down the throats of consumers. After the campaign is out they sprinkle it with a little irrelevant numbers and stats, which they get from their social media agencies, and 'voila' the marketer gets started on a PPT presentation on their successful digital media campaign.

Naqvi says the use of content marketing by brands is nothing new but more widespread now. "Brand's now understand that they need to give what a consumer needs. Only when it is useful to consumers then there will be a virality of the ad. Content marketing is used by brands to push their values and create value for the consumer. In the end, it is all about getting closer to a consumer so that they recall the brand at the time of purchase," he said.
